A native of Mexico, Juan Alvarez, 42, started working at Peso's Mexican Restaurant on South Florida Avenue seven years ago. The restaurant is family-owned and operated, and he enjoys the relaxed atmosphere. "No one bothers me," he said with a smile. Cooking is one of his passions, and he knows he does it well because people tell him so. "Even coffee. I make the best coffee," he said, laughing.
What was your favorite food growing up? I still haven't grown up. I'm pretty short. Just kidding. Mole de Olla. It's a sauce with chicken and ground peanuts and chocolate. I like it very spicy.
Do you have to make your food bland for American customers? I make it a little less spicy, but if people say they want it authentic, I can spice it up for them.
What's the best desert you make? Sopapillas. They're pastries with cinnamon, honey and powdered sugar. They're served hot, and I'll serve them with ice cream on top if people ask.
What are your plans for the future? I'd like to own my own restaurant in Mexico one day. One like this, with a family atmosphere.
